Responding to an increased demand for affordable senior housing in Connecticut’s lower Fairfield County and to improve on the operational efficiency of the existing facility, in 2008 the Hill House board of directors pursued an addition of 24 units to their existing building designed by Buchanan Architects in 1997.
Due to economic pressures and the lack of state funding the addition didn’t get underway until 2013. The existing building, topography, and proximity of adjacent properties posed a unique challenge to providing an easily traversable connection to the primary gathering place for the residents, the dining room. A bridge provides the connection between the additions communal facilities on its third floor, a new community room, crafts room, and mailboxes, and the dining room, living room and main entrance on the first floor of the existing. The position of the addition allowed the existing dining room, central kitchen, and loading dock to remain in use throughout the construction. Using the topography the overall scale of the addition was kept in context to the surrounding homes and existing building by depressing the first floor into the hillside, burring the storage and mechanical spaces and at the same time providing a full height above ground wall to that floors apartments.
