Background: Renovation of, and addition to, an existing six-year old public facilities building in the town of Canterbury Connecticut. approximately. The existing library proved too small at the outset for the community of approximately 5,000 people, and the library sought State funding to triple the size of the library to 9,000 square feet.
The solution includes swapping the existing library and community room spaces, adding a 6,000 square foot addition onto the east side of the building. The addition, reflecting the form of the existing building, houses would house the primary functions of the library, including circulation, main reading room and adult collection, as well as both the young adult and children's libraries. The renovated portion of the existing library would house the reading rooms, conference rooms, small commercial spaces, and combined entrance hall/art gallery.
The addition working in conjunction with the relocated of the existing community room to create an exterior public space which can be utilized for both public and private events such as weddings, receptions, and musical performances.
The project intends to seek LEED accreditation, employing such systems as photo-voltaic panels and geothermal heating, as well as utilizing solar hot water, substantial day-lighting, low-e glass, and renewable materials.
