Renovation of, and addition to, an existing six-year old public facilities building in a town of approximately 5,000 people. The existing library proved too small at the outset, and the library decided to seek State funding to triple the size of the library to 9,000 square feet.
The solution includes swapping the existing library and community room spaces, adding a 6,000 square foot addition onto the east side of the building. The addition, reflecting the shape of the existing building, houses the major functions of the library, including circulation, main reading room and adult collection, and both the young adult and children's libraries. The renovated portion of the library houses the leisure reading room, conference rooms, a friends' store, and combined entrance hall/art gallery.
The long addition combines with the relocated community room to create an exterior public space which the town intends to use for both public and private events such as weddings, receptions, and musical performances.
The town hopes to seek LEED accreditation, employing such systems as photovoltaic panels, geothermal heating, solar hot water, substantial day-lighting, low-e glass, and renewable materials.
